Bulk Substrate Explained

Bulk substrate is the larger material that grain spawn expands into after clean colonization is established. In practical terms, it provides the water reservoir, physical structure, and surface area that support further growth and eventual fruiting. Different workflows use different substrate blends, but the basic idea stays the same: spawn brings the living mycelium, and bulk substrate gives it room and resources to run. New growers sometimes treat bulk substrate like it should be doing all the work. In reality, it performs best when the spawn going into it is already healthy and vigorous. A weak culture or dirty spawn does not become strong just because it was mixed into a larger volume.
